Come on in, the water is warm. The DraftKings Sportsbook may only currently be available in New Jersey, but the new sportsbook is looking to quickly innovate sports betting by making games that more palatable to new players.
This week, the brand introduced DraftKings Sportbook Pools, a new concept promising to be more for the casual sports bettor. For those that have played DraftKings DFS, you may have seen something similar with DraftKings Team Pick’em.
The DK Sportsbook describes the new games as “like an office pool, but with the entire state of New Jersey.” The new games are available on the DraftKings Sportsbook app via iOS and Android.
DraftKings Pools throw out the concept of more complicated aspects of sportsbetting such as points spreads and odds and simplify things — yes, sportsbetting can be very complicated to a layman. DraftKings makes the games more accessible to casuals by making the selection process more similar to daily fantasy sports rather than sports betting. Instead of betting a side with odds, bettors will choose outcomes from a group of sporting events, such as selecting NFL game winners from a given week.
While the pool offered during the first week is extremely straight-forward — selecting winners of NFL games — one can imagine DraftKings could expand pools in many ways, including across sports or even adding player performance into the mix.
Winners of the pools are determined based on the number of correct picks. Before entering the pool, you will be able to see the buy-in and the total prizes awarded for the pool.
DraftKings attempts to make playing in pools and entering them as easy as possible, which they outline in three steps:
Winners of the pool will be determined by the entries with the most correct selections within a given pool. Fortunately, you wont necessarily have to make the most correct selections.
As an example, during the first pool, which is being held during Week 10 of the NFL season, a bettor must enter the contest with $20 for their share of a prize pool that is guaranteed to be at least $200,000. If you select 13 picks correct, you will share 50% of the prize pool with all other players that achieve the feat. Players making 12 correct selections will share 30% of the prize pool while 11 correct selections will share 20% of the prize pool.
As DraftKings pools continue to expand, we would imagine that the prize structures will vary based on the types of pools that the DraftKings sportsbook starts to run.
