The NFL season is peak time for DFS, but DraftKings offers contests for over a dozen different sports such as all major sports and a handful of sports you wouldn’t necessarily expect such as Tennis, NASCAR, MMA. Within each sport, DraftKings offers a variety of leagues (CFL, AFL, European Basketball to name a few) and also gives players a selection of different “styles” of contests to play. For the traditional DFS experience, Classic contests are offered, but you can also choose one-game Showdown or a pick’em style Tiers contest, with other variations in between.

DraftKings contests styles broaden scope of DFS
Gone are the days of DFS being pigeonholed into a certain way to play at DraftKings. Within each of the sports and leagues available on the platform, DraftKings offers a large variety of contest types and styles, more than any other daily fantasy sports site. Here are a look at the most common game types you’ll find while playing at DraftKings.
Classic: Traditional DFS contests, these salary-based contests allow you to select a certain number of players in your roster while staying under the salary cap. Most of the highest guaranteed contests, league, head to head, 50/50, double ups and multipliers are available through these contests.
Showdown: Like Classic contests, a salary cap is used but where these contests differ is the slate only consists of players from one game. The other major difference from classic contests is that all positions are all “Flex.”
Tiers/Pick’em: Instead of a salary cap, DraftKings users draft lineups by selecting similar players from a tier. This is generally a more simplified and straight-forward form of DFS, meaning the games can be great for new players.
There are variations of these contests as well. Examples include a Showdown Captain Mode for WNBA contests and a Weekend style for PGA contests. If you are a new player, be sure to also check out the Beginner and Casual contests, which provide you an introduction to DFS without playing against the best of the best.
Due to the drastic difference in structure, make sure to double-check the type of contest you are entering before you begin drafting.
An entirely separate part of the DraftKings lobby are DraftKings Leagues. Introduced as a way to bring friends together, DraftKings Leagues allows any DraftKings user to create league and invite friends. The feature allows you to play against your friends in a private league consisting of DFS contests that you create. In addition to providing an easy way to play contests against your friends, a leaderboard will keep track of how the best players are in your league for who gets the bragging rights.
The DraftKings platform
The DraftKings website arguably provides users the best DFS experience, especially for those that play a lot. DraftKings are by far the best when it comes to the interface used to find, monitor the contests you enter.
The DraftKings Lobby may be a bit overwhelming on first glance, but its actually laid out very well for the options it provides. Here is the view after you have created an account and signed in:
By default, you will land on the Featured contests on DraftKings. This will include the most popular and biggest prize pool tournaments across sports. If you want something a bit more specific, instead select your sport. Next you will want to select the game style (Classic, Pick’em, Showdown etc) as well as the slate (the games that comprise the contests you wish to play)
Further narrow down the text you want to play by setting the entry fee and the type of contest you want to play, which will include attributes such as tournaments, head to head, 50/50s, double-ups and multipliers. When the contests have been filtered, sort by clicking on column headings.
DraftKings draft screen
Once you have found and entered your contest, it’s time to draft. You’ll see a screen similar to what is below (on computer/laptop)
The top of the screen will include the details of the contest and the games within the slate. It doesn’t hurt to check these details before you draft so you know exactly what contest you entering before you submit your entry.
In the draft section, you will find a list of positions that are eligible to draft, with tabs by position and sorted by salary (if applicable). Draft your player by selecting the green plus sign next to the play. Fill out your roster while staying within the rules of the contest. Player info and injury information is conveniently available to DraftKings users to prevent them from making a costly mistake.
Click “Enter” to officially join the contest. You will not be able to reverse your entry into the contest after this point, but you will be able to edit your lineup up until the start of the first contest.
The DraftKings mobile app is available on iOS and Android. While a high volume entry of many contests can be slightly slower, the experience on mobile wins on convenience and ease of use.
Playets can do almost everything on mobile that they can on the desktop website: enter contests, change rosters, deposit or withdrawal, monitor results in real time — it’s all available on the DraftKings app.
The highly rated app is a must-have for any DraftKings user who plays at least occasionally, but mobile users can also access a mobile-optimized version of the site. It’s not as slick as the app, but will definitely suffice when you need it.
The new DraftKings Rewards Program allows players to earn more when they play more. Players can earn a variety of perks through the program including Crowns, Levels, Contest Tickets and DK Dollars – which we will explain below.
Crowns: Crowns are earned when playing on real money contests on DraftKings at a rate of 1 Crown per $1 of entry (contests must be at least $1 to earn Crowns). For example, in a $10 contest, a player would earn 10 Crowns. Crowns can be used to purchase contest tickets and will also be used to determine your Daily Rewards Status Tier.
Levels: Not to be confused with your Daily Rewards Status Tier, Levels are earned based on Experienced Points, which are accumulated when achieving feats. The primary purpose of Levels is for bragging rights to your friends. Players can receive a status level of between 1 to 91
: Players that earn at least 100 Crowns during the month will qualify for DraftKings Daily Rewards, which as the name would suggest, give you rewards each day based on your play from the previous month. Rewards include additional Crowns, contests tickets and DK Dollars. The higher status level that is achieved, the better Daily Rewards will be.

: Separate from Daily Rewards and Achievements are Missions. This daily perk is a single action that you can take during the day. If you achieve the day’s mission you will receive the prize for that day. Common prizes are additional Crowns.
